ABOUT ME

IMG_1377.HEIC

John Flores is a contemporary ceramic artist from Yucca Valley, California. He acquired his BFA with a focus in Ceramics at California State University Fullerton in 2019. John uses traditional clay hand building techniques, combined with contemporary glazing applications

At first glance John's sculptures seem otherworldly, but they are seeped in the everyday life of people. Botanical forms morph into obscure but familiar figures, mimicking a connection between terra, flora and fauna. Discreet toes can be seen peeking out from underneath figures layered in skins of leaves and sprouts. Lifelike faces peering out of meticulously crafted blooms, cacti portraits with eyes staring outwards into the desert sky. Flores’ work lives in a garden of conversation, sculptures telling stories of personal awakenings and transitions in life. Each piece collaborating together to create scenes that emulate resilience and renewal.

“My work revolves around a notion of sacredness that I associate with our natural world. Viewed as an interconnectedness between all living things. These notions inhabit the core of my work and are built upon by plugging in everyday life experiences to tell a story. Stories that often deal with personal awakenings, transformations and transitions in life.”
